Pumped Up – Early Intervention for Better Outcomes in Chronic Heart Failure

Early diagnosis and management of chronic heart failure is key to better outcomes. This series of short, sharp and inspiring talks highlights the critical role of the GP in early recognition and management of heart failure in the community. Our panel will take questions from the floor as they touch on essential diagnostic principles, discuss best practice pharmacologic management, bring you up to speed with the newest medications, and broaden your thinking on the impact of the heart failure journey from a patient’s perspective.


Dr Joe Kosterich

MBBS (WA) / Adjunct Professor (teaching) - UWA

Doctor, speaker, author of three books, media presenter and health industry consultant, Dr Joe Kosterich has been a GP for 28 years. He is WA Medical Director of IPN and previously held senior positions in various GP bodies.

Prof Gerry O'Driscoll

MB BCh BAO PhD (Hons.) DMed FRACP FCSANZ FESC FACC GAICD / Cardiologist and Medical Director Perth Cardiovascular Institute

Prof O'Driscoll has 25 years' experience in heart failure and cardiac transplantation. He headed the Medical Head Advanced Heart Failure, Ventricular Assist Device and Cardiac Transplant services in WA from 1994-2010. He is a national and international cardiology speaker, presenter and chairman; his research resulting in 300+ publications and presentations.

Ms Niki Parle

RN BN Pgrad Dip MN / Nurse Practitioner in Heart failure

Niki trained in Wales and has worked in the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Service at Fiona Stanley Hospital, establishing the Nurse Practitioner role since 2008. Her role consists of care of patients with advanced heart failure in the outpatient setting, and has presented papers outlining the outcomes of the WA Advanced Heart Failure Service.
