PATIENTS IN PAIN: Assessing and managing the spectrum of pain

This ALM looks at pain across the spectrum, from acute to chronic and nocioceptive to neuropathic. It takes a practical approach, focusing on assessing and managing patients. The 3 modules include interactive case studies & discussions highlighting issues you encounter every day in your practice.
To qualify for the ALM, you must attend all 3 topics (2 sessions each). It is preferable to attend the sessions on Back, Neck & shoulder pain and Painful diabetic neuropathy before attending Understanding Neuropathic Pain.

1. Back, neck and shoulder pain

Back pain is one of the most common, and frequently frustrating, conditions seen by GPs. This module examines back, neck and shoulder pain, focussing on assessment of patients – including identification of ‘yellow flags’ (factors that might lead to development of chronic pain) and ‘red flags’ (requiring follow-up of underlying pathology) – and management of nocioceptive and neuropathic components of pain.
