Mental Health - CBT Strategies for problems that affect youth
Substance use, depression and anxiety symptoms in adolescents may evolve into frank mental disorders often with comorbid substance abuse/dependence. The adverse impact on academic performance, social and interpersonal functioning and personality development makes early intervention at the general practitioner level essential. With CBT being widely considered a core treatment modality for this age group, patients particularly benefit when it is introduced early and confidently by the family GP. A rationale to using CBT in youth will be provided and the common CBT strategies of relaxation, breathing control, behavioural activation, graded exposure and cognitive restructuring will be demonstrated. Case histories will be worked through, allowing the participants to explore which combination of strategies to use in different presentations.
