Venous Thrombo-Embolism – a management update

Venous thrombo-embolism (VTE) is a common condition affecting 1-2 per 1000 people annually. The goals of VTE treatment are prevention of clot propagation, prevention of embolism, prevention of the post-thrombotic syndrome and prevention of recurrent VTE. The mainstay of treatment is anticoagulation therapy; however recommendations regarding treatment duration continue to evolve. Using current guidelines, therapy should be tailored according to each patient’s unique situation to ensure appropriate treatment and reduction of VTE-related complications.
