Chronic back problems – Expert Panel Discussion

Chronic back problems are a constant and frustrating presentation in GP. This panel discussion will present the latest views on management and treatment options. Guest speakers will include:-
Dr Richard Parkinson, Neurosurgeon, will discuss Spinal canal stenosis and lumbar degeneration:- When is surgery necessary and the new minimally invasive options. Dr Chris Browne, Rheumatologist, will discuss non-operative management of low back pain and sciatica.
Dr Steven Faux, Rehab Physician, will focus on the St Vincent's research in screening people at the point of acute injury to target those at risk of developing chronic pain & disability problems, and the relevance of and effectiveness of multidisciplinary pain programs.
Dr Trudy Rebbeck, Physiotherapist, specialising in back problems, will discuss the following: 1) Validity (sensitivity, specificity and likelihood ratios) of clinical examination in the diagnosis of low back pain. 2) Beyond evidence based practice: the emergent sub classification of chronic low back pain and its effect on outcomes in physical therapy.
