Emergency Medicine - Doc “My Chest Hurts”

Heart disease is the greatest killer in the developed world. Chest pain is a common presentation. The ability to determine which patients have significant presentations and need admission and workup and which patients can be sent home, is crucial to delivering appropriate patient care. Diagnoses may vary from coronary artery disease, pulmonary embolism, cardiac failure and aortic dissection, to less serious conditions of pleurisy and costochondritis. But can we really tell which patient’s have benign causes and can be sent home? The literature is indisputable. Some of the results will surprise you.
