The topics covered in this module represent conditions that are seen more frequently in general practice, owing to our ageing population. Topics covered include but are not limited to CKD in the elderly, Osteoarthritis, Cognitive impairment and Dementia, deafness, men’s health problems. A complementary/lifestyle approach will also be discussed to help alleviate and prevent further deterioration.
This ALM constitutes 6hours of education – 4 of which are interactive either with case presentations, role plays, discussions or practical skills. Each activity makes provision for a Q&A session which the facilitator helps coordinate. Delegates must include 4 of the interactive workshop activities, that is two thirds of the ALM, to qualify for this ALM. The remaining 2 hours may be chosen from the seminars or other interactive workshops.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Develop confidence and competency in identifying illness related to the elderly
- Identify appropriate diagnostic procedures and management options
- Increased knowledge of therapeutic options to treat illnesses of the elderly.
- Application of early measures and diagnostic advice and tests to minimise risk factors.
- Patient Safety – Implement a system for regular review, monitoring and patient education. The system should include patient adherence and regular review and recall and f/up to document patient’s progress to enhance patient compliance and improve treatment outcomes.
