Research undertaken in Australia has shown that cardiac surgery patients use complementary medicines and the majority are interested in hospitals providing complementary therapy services. Research has also shown that some complementary medicines and therapies can provide substantial benefits to people with cardiovascular disease, including those requiring surgery.

This lecture will discuss the integration of complementary therapies within hospitals from an international perspective and then focus on the development of the Alfred Hospital Integrative Cardiac Wellness program, an Australian first, together with research findings from The Alfred. There will also be a mini-review of those CM treatments which can provide benefits for people with cardiovascular disease.
